Canteens

Provisional Supply offers the two most widely issued canteens used during the war. These are the New York Depot and Philadelphia Depot canteens.
Canteens from both depots were constructed with smooth sides and pewter spouts.The primary differences between the two depots were in the straps and the cork retainers. New York depot canteens were issued with a leather sling and a jack chain cork retainer. Philadelphia depot canteens were issued with a cloth sling and waxed thread cork retainer.
A third depot in Cinncinnati issued canteens as well these were virtually identical to the Philadelphia Depot issue canteens, except most of the spouts were tin.

This is the New York Depot variant canteen. It is properly covered in jean cloth and features the correct leather strap with roller buckle. This model was issued with #16 1/2" single jack chain stopper retainer attached to the sling loop. Complete with exacting handmade pewter spout as per originals. **All canteens can also be purchased with a cloth strap as many original later war models were issued with a cloth strap.

Here is the Philadelphia Depot variant canteen. It too is properly covered in jean cloth and utilizes a correct cotton strap. The stopper retainer is of waxed twisted string as originals. The string is tied around the strap retaining loop, our Philadelphia Depot canteens ARE NOT converted New York Depot units. There is not jack chain hole in the strap retaining loop. Complete with exacting handmade pewter spout as per originals.

Spouts were usually made of Pewter with the exception of the Cincinnati manufactured canteens which were tin. Some pewter spouts will have the makers initials or in some cases the entire company name, stamped in the soft metal. Spouts can come in a variety of shapes but most all are the same size.
